EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
